Hand Made | National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec
Temporary exhibition 2018 | National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec
Project Background
The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ) preserves and showcases Québec art across time. As part of its seasonal programming, it invited La bande à Paul to co-create a temporary exhibition at the crossroads of craft and contemporary art.
What La bande à Paul Brought to the Table
Curated by Bernard Lamarche, Handmade offers a reflection on the relationship between artisanal techniques and fine art, through the work of 38 Canadian artists. La bande à Paul was tasked with showcasing works that were already compelling, ranging from video and ceramics to quilts, puzzles, and more, across five thematic groupings. The team visited artists in their studios to discuss how best to present each piece. These generous, in-depth exchanges led to a variety of display approaches – some bold, others understated – all aligned with the spirit and wishes of the artists themselves.
