Head in the clouds | SDC Village Montreal

Winning project (not implemented) | Sainte-Catherine Street, Montreal

Project Background

In 2019, the Société de développement commercial (SDC) du Village launched an international landscape architecture competition to replace Claude Cormier’s iconic canopy of 180,000 coloured balls. La bande à Paul joined forces with New York’s WxY Studio and Collectif Escargo and emerged as one of the winning teams.

What La bande à Paul Brought to the Table

The challenge was to imagine a bold new collective artwork to replace Cormier’s well-loved urban installation. Inspired by the slow drift and transformation of clouds, the collective designed a street-long experience unfolding across six zones across the Village, each with its own palette and rhythm. Built to withstand all seasons, day and night, the work offers a poetic reflection of the Village’s vibrant diversity. Vibrant and multidimensional, the installation draws visitors into the shifting moods of Ste-Cath, unfolding its many faces with surprise and emotional resonance.
