W8banakiak | Abénaki Museum

Permanent exhibition 2024 | Abénaki Museum

Project Background

In the fall of 2022, the board and leadership of the museum invited La bande à Paul to renew its permanent exhibition. The intention was explicit: to present the Nation’s history – but above all, to reflect who the W8banakiak are today.

What La bande à Paul Brought to the Table

The team began by mapping the exhibition space around four powerful verbs: Being, Knowing, Saying, and Taking Action. This framework foregrounds a Nation that is not only rooted in history, but fully alive – dynamic, evolving, and engaged in the present. A series of short films featuring community members ground the exhibition in lived, contemporary experience. Sensory design played a central role: visitors encounter immersive olfactory landscapes, touchable materials, and a sweeping screen that projects images of the territory. Every element was crafted to engage smell, touch, sight, and hearing—while above all, inviting an emotional connection.
